IMU 3-axis orientation and motion diagram

Overview

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) combine accelerometer and gyroscope measurements to provide information related to motion, orientation and angular rate. Common output forms include analog voltage and standard digital interfaces such as I2C, SPI and UART.

Typical Applications

  • UAV Flight Control
  • Robotics
  • Motion Tracking
  • Vibration Monitoring
  • Real-Time Attitude Estimation

Typical Brands

Cost-effective alternatives may be available for selected models and signal interface requirements associated with brands such as Bosch, InvenSense, Analog Devices and Xsens.

Typical Signal Interfaces

IMU sensors are available with analog outputs and standard digital interfaces such as I2C, SPI and UART. Similar signal interfaces are widely used in DAQ and real-time control environments, including Quanser, NI, dSPACE and Speedgoat platforms.

Practical Experience

We have practical experience with signal verification and data acquisition for this sensor category in our own lab environment.
